Growing up in Ludhiyana, I was immersed in the busy environment of my family's automobile business. My father and brothers owned a bicycle business that exported items all over the world. Those early days were more than just about assisting others; they were also about discovering a passion that would determine my future. My name is Geeta Tuli, but everybody calls me Geet. This is the story of my journey from a small-town girl to a fashion designer with clients around the world.
From a young age, I was fascinated by how people could turn pieces of cloth into beautiful garments. My interest in fashion designing sparked when I was 15. Watching nearby aunties stitch frocks and dresses from their old suits excited me, and I eagerly learned how to stitch. I dreamed of creating something unique, something that celebrated beauty and strength. However, life had other plans. I completed my BA and got married at the age of 18. My husband owned a business of generator parts all over Punjab, and we had three kids, one son and two daughters.
In our joint family, I couldn’t work post-marriage due to family responsibilities, even though I always dreamt of having a boutique. Understanding my passion, my husband established a boutique for me. I worked there for 11 years, but due to some medical reasons, I had to close it and started working from home. Unfortunately, the customers weren’t what I had hoped for.
One day, while returning from Moga, I told my husband that I wanted to open a boutique in the most elite area of Ludhiana, Dugri Line, because only there would I find customers who appreciated my work. We rented a shop, and within three months, I received a fantastic response.
Then one day, I saw Ritvik Sir in a video and told my family that I wanted to pursue fashion designing from Skillinabox. My husband and children were incredibly supportive and encouraged me to join the course.
Enrolling in Skillinabox was a game-changer. The lessons were comprehensive and practical, covering everything from basic sewing techniques to advanced design concepts. The flexibility of learning at my own pace allowed me to balance my studies with my responsibilities at home and in our family business. Now, watching the videos motivates me a lot. This course has truly changed my life because earlier I had little knowledge about various aspects of fashion designing. Now, I am able to perform and incorporate all these skills into my boutique. For example, earlier I didn't know about tie-dye and embroidery, but now I can perform these techniques and incorporate them into my garments.
Starting my business was scary. There were times I doubted myself, but my passion for fashion kept me going. Each new client and every piece I created boosted my confidence. Seeing the joy on a client's face when they wore my designs was incredibly rewarding. Soon, word spread, and my little studio began to attract clients from not just my locality but from different parts of the world. Receiving international orders was a huge milestone and felt like a personal victory.
Balancing my roles has been one of the toughest parts of this journey. As a daughter, I wanted to honor my father’s legacy. As a mother, I aimed to set an example for my children about the importance of hard work and perseverance. And as an entrepreneur, I had to manage countless responsibilities. It often felt overwhelming, but these roles also gave me strength and kept me focused on my goals.
One of the most memorable moments was when an international client reached out to me. It wasn’t just about expanding my business; it was about the validation of my hard work and vision. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of designing for clients from around the world, each new order reaffirming my belief in my work.
Through all the ups and downs, my family has been my biggest support. Their belief in me gave me the strength to keep going. My children’s smiles, my husband’s encouragement, and the happiness of my clients have been my driving force. There were times when I felt exhausted and doubted myself, but quitting was never an option. Every setback taught me something valuable, and every challenge made me stronger.
Today, when I look back, I feel incredibly grateful. Grateful for the journey, the lessons, and the amazing people who have believed in me. 'Geet the Designer Studio' is not just a business; it’s a reflection of my passion and hard work. I owe a lot to Skillinabox for giving me the foundation I needed to build my career.
To anyone with a dream, I say this: “Believe in yourself.” Trust your journey, even when it’s tough. Embrace challenges, learn from failures, and celebrate every victory, no matter how small. Your dreams are worth it, and amazing things happen when you don’t give up.
So this was my Journey of becoming a Fashion Designery from Ludhiyana to the global stage has been full of love, hard work, and endless learning. And this is just the beginning. Here’s to many more beautiful creations and to celebrating the elegance and strength of every woman, everywhere.
With love,
Geet
